Town of Draper / Loretta

The Town of Draper was established about 1900. It has an area of 144 square miles. According to the 1930 census there was a population of 579 that year. There were two villages with post offices, Loretta and Draper. At first there were several one room schools. The one that was at the corner of Fishtrap Road and North Clover Road was moved and is now the Jensen/Hansen American Legion Hall.

In 1923 a brick school building was built where the fire hall now stands. It had nine rooms with a gymnasium. The enrollment was 160 with 8 teachers and the budget was $21,000.00 with free books and stationary.

During the 1920’s there were about 70 farms producing milk, eggs, poultry, potatoes and mixed garden vegetables. The families had to follow the logging roads to Fifield or Hayward fording streams along the way to get the groceries that they did not raise. Also logging was a big industry. It produced logs, pulpwood, poles, railroad ties, lath and wood for fuel.

There were two churches, a Lutheran and Presbyterian. At that time common labor was paid $3.00 a day without board and the logging camps paid $30.00 to $40.00 a month with board.

The dump is open on Wednesdays 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The regular monthly meeting of the Board Supervisors is the second Monday of the Month at 6:00 p.m. at the Draper Town Hall. The Agenda for each meeting is posted on the Town Hall, Loretta/Draper Municipal Park, the entry to Beer Hunter Bar & Grill of Loretta, and the Evergreen Inn. The Agenda is posted the Monday prior to the meeting.
